Every educator is familiar with instructional accommodations and curricular modifications that increase student access to learning and success in the classroom. Yet these important terms are often used interchangeably or inappropriately. One key to bringing learning within the reach of every student is a clear understanding of instructional accommodations and curricular modifications and their importance to effective instruction for a wide range of students. From gifted students who need more challenging learning experiences to students who struggle in school and need additional supports to succeed, every educator will significantly enhance their practice through this course.
Course Objectives
- Use the correct definition of accommodations and modifications to identify adjustments in the teaching that will benefit diverse learners
- Distinguish between the two and apply them in hierarchical order from the least intrusive and complex to the most intrusive and complex
- Apply four types of instructional accommodations to typical areas of difficulty students experience in the classroom
- Apply curricular modifications based on individual student needs
- Review the success of chosen accommodations or modifications for individual students and make adjustments as needed
- Recognize that the use of appropriate instructional accommodations can easily boost the performance of every student in the classroom
