Closing the Achievement Gap

This session addresses the timely topic of the challenge of closing the achievement gap for struggling students. This session outlines a process for identifying systems issues, instructional delivery issues, and decision-making concerns that are impacting student success.

This training features 23 steps our firm finds essential when working with schools to improve the performance of students with disabilities. These 23 steps are categorized across three broad systems issues:

Learner Outcomes

This training is designed for principals, assistant principals, and central office administrators.

Each participant will learn:

  • The critical need for shared ownership for all students;
  • High impact instructional strategies that increase success for all students, including struggling students;
  • A focus on flexible grouping, high expectations, use of scaffolding, and many other instructional strategies that should characterize Tier I teaching;
  • The importance of assessing teacher knowledge of core concepts in the curriculum and of the best methodologies for supporting learning;
  • Cultural proficiency for teachers and culturally responsive teaching techniques;
  • An end to remedial approaches substituted for strategies for accelerating learning;
  • Quality standards for services provided by special education and ELL staff and other special populations teachers that will increase their impact on student achievement;
  • Ways to increase the amount and quality of academic learning time (ALT);
  • Instructional leadership strategies, such as coaching and peer feedback, that result in changed practice in the classroom.
