Shifting Teacher Perspectives on Differentiated Instruction in Flour Bluff ISD
Stetson & Associates recently partnered with Flour Bluff ISD to deliver a half-day professional learning session on Differentiated Instruction (DI). The training focused on practical strategies to meet the diverse needs of learners in inclusive classroomsโequipping teachers with tools to plan proactively, use flexible grouping, build supportive learning environments, and distinguish between accommodations and modifications.
Training Highlights
Participants engaged with a wide range of resources, including:
- Growth Mindset Classroom Talk frameworks to encourage persistence and resilience.
- Student learner inventories and surveys to better understand readiness, interests, and learning styles.
- Flexible grouping strategies to match students with peers and tasks in dynamic ways.
- Instructional tools such as interactive notebooks, response cards, and graphic organizers.
- Guidance on accommodations vs. modifications to support studentsโ access to grade-level content.
Shifts in Teacher Mindsets
At the close of the session, educators reflected on what they โused to thinkโ and what they โnow think.โ Their words highlight the powerful shift in perspective:
- โI used to think differentiation meant more work for the teacher, but now I think it means smarter teaching that meets students where they are.โ
- โI used to think paras should work independently with students, now I think paras should support Tier 1 instruction.โ
- โI used to think differentiation was hard, but now I think there are great options at all levels.โ
- โI used to think only some kids need differentiation. But now I know all kids can benefit from different teaching styles.โ
- โI used to think I couldnโt effectively teach students with special needs. Now I know I can.โ
Lasting Impact
This professional development not only introduced new tools and strategies, but also built teacher confidence. Many participants left feeling more prepared, more collaborative with paraeducators, and more committed to creating inclusive classrooms where all students can succeed.
At Stetson & Associates, we are proud to support Flour Bluff ISD in strengthening teacher capacity and fostering a culture of equity and high expectations for every learner.
