There is nothing like the beginning of a new school year—the myriad of emotions, excitement, nervousness, and anxiety around long to-do lists. As students enter our classrooms, there is no doubt that every student’s learning will be unique. As we welcome new students, we must ensure that all students receive the support they need to thrive academically and emotionally.

This is not always an easy task, and it can take time. It can be easy to dismiss the value of multi-tier strategies. In part because it is also easy to default to old routines or defer to the same intervention for all. Luckily, educators have the magic of Tiered Instruction to offer targeted and individualized approaches to help struggling students bridge gaps and reach their potential.

First, let’s briefly review the three tiers of instruction:

  • Tier 1: This is the general classroom instruction provided to all students. It sets the foundation for learning and aims to meet the needs of the majority of students.
  • Tier 2: Targeted interventions for students who require additional support beyond the standard classroom instruction. These students need more focused and individualized assistance.
  • Tier 3: Intensive interventions for students who face significant challenges in learning. These students require highly personalized and intensive support to make progress.

Tier 2 and Tier 3 instruction offer a lifeline to students who need additional support to be successful. Simply tailoring strategies to meet individual students’ needs which can profoundly impact students’ learning outcomes. That is the magic.

Examples of strategies that support Tier 2 instruction include:

  • Small Group Instruction: Create small groups based on similar learning needs. These groups allow for more focused instruction and targeted practice.
  • Differentiated Assignments: Tailor assignments to match students’ abilities and learning styles. This ensures that each student is challenged appropriately.
  • Additional Practice: Offer extra practice opportunities for specific skills or concepts that students find challenging.
  • Strategic Feedback: Provide timely and specific feedback to help students understand their strengths and areas needing improvement.
  • Peer Tutoring: Pair students with varying skill levels. This fosters collaboration and allows struggling students to learn from their peers.
  • Scaffolded Instruction: Gradually increase the complexity of tasks to help students build skills and confidence.

Examples of strategies that support Tier 3 instruction include:

  • Individualized Learning Plans: Develop personalized learning plans that address each student’s unique needs, goals, and learning preferences.
  • Intensive Skill Work: Provide focused, one-on-one instruction to target specific skill gaps and challenges.
  • Frequent Progress Monitoring: Regularly assess and monitor student progress to adjust interventions as needed.
  • Multi-Sensory Instruction: Engage multiple senses to enhance learning. For instance, use visuals, hands-on activities, and auditory cues.
  • Explicit Instruction: Break down complex skills into manageable steps, explicitly teaching each step to ensure understanding.
  • Collaboration with Specialists: Work closely with special education teachers, speech therapists, and other specialists to provide comprehensive support.
  • Use of Technology: Leverage educational apps, online platforms, and assistive technology tools to cater to diverse learning needs.

As you begin the new school year and welcome new students into your classroom, take advantage of the magic of Tiered instruction. With dedication and a commitment to revealing every student’s potential, the educational journey becomes a positive one for all.
